HICKS AND GOULBOURN GUITARS
Steve Hicks is a top class luthier and has built all four guitars currently in use for performances and recording.
Steve has two guitars, the older a cutaway OM shape made from figured Bubinga with a spruce soundboard and mahogany neck. His most recent guitar, based on a small Jumbo model, is made from Malaysian Blackwood with a Californian Redwood soundboard and Peruvian Walnut neck.
Lynn’s guitar was based on a Gibson B25 shape. It is made from Malaysian Blackwood back and sides with a Sitka Spruce soundboard and Peruvian Walnut neck. The slotted headstock is veneered with Snakewood and inlaid with an Andy de Paul torch design and Waverley engraved tuners.
The second guitar Lynn uses is one made by Steve in 2015. It is a tertz 12 string guitar. Steve designed this guitar to bring a different high, ringing element to the duo’s sound. It has beautifully flamed Ovangkol back and sides and the soundboard is a spruce that came from Russia many years ago. The tuners are Waverly and it has an L R Baggs Acive Element pickup.
Steve also uses the K Yairi, ‘Steve Hicks Signature Guitar’, which was designed using his specifications and presented to him in recognition of his work in demonstrating K Yairi Guitars. It has Indian Rosewood back and sides, Sitka spruce soundboard and is fitted with the LR Baggs Anthem pickup.
Lynn has, on occasion used her 1985 Martin HD28 custom guitar in, (high strung), ‘Nashville’ tuning.
Wikipedia:
“Nashville or high strung tuning refers to the practice of replacing the wound E, A, D and G strings on a six-string guitar with lighter gauge strings to allow tuning an octave higher than standard. This is usually achieved by using one string from each of the six courses of a twelve string set, using the higher string for those courses tuned in octaves.”
